What is Sonography Test
Sonography, also called ‘ultrasound’, uses sound waves to make pictures of the movements in the body. A device called a transducer emits high-frequency sound that cannot be heard by the ear. As sound waves bounce or move to determine the size, type and consistency of soft tissues and organs, it is recorded with the help of echoes.
All the information is sent to the computer at the same time, which displays a picture of this information on the screen. Ultrasound technicians or sonographers are given special training on how to perform this test. There are several types of ultrasound scans, depending on which part of the body is being scanned and why. There are mainly three types.
- External Ultrasound Scan:- In this, the probe moves over the skin.
- Internal Ultrasound Scan:- In this the probe is inserted inside the body.
- Endoscopic Ultrasound Scan:- In this, the probe is attached to the end of a long, thin and flexible tube (endoscope) and it is sent inside the body.
Medical Diagnostic Sonography
Testing:- Doctors may also use ultrasound to test for a variety of conditions affecting the body’s organs and soft tissues. These conditions include problems affecting the heart, blood vessels, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, uterus, ovaries, eyes, thyroid, and testicles.
Pregnancy:- Ultrasound pictures are of many uses during pregnancy. Ultrasound can be used to determine early dates, detect the presence of twins, and detect ectopic pregnancies. Ultrasound is also considered a valuable screening tool to detect problems such as birth defects.
Used during medical procedures:- Ultrasound imaging also helps doctors during certain medical procedures, such as needle biopsy. Because in this procedure, doctors have to remove a sample of tissue from a very precise area, which is tested in the lab.
Therapeutic applications:- Ultrasound is also sometimes used to look for soft tissue injury.
Echocardiography:- It measures the speed of the heart and heart valves and the flow of blood through them. It also evaluates the heart rate and the amount of blood pumped by the heart with each stroke.
In special circumstances:- When Intravenous is needed but having trouble finding a vein. In this case, ultrasound guidance is used to identify large veins in the neck, chest, or groin.
