Firewall is software or firmware that enforces a set of rules about which data packets are allowed to enter the network and which are not. 

Firewalls are incorporated into a variety of network devices to filter traffic and reduce the risk of malicious packets over the public Internet affecting the security of private networks. Firewalls can also be purchased as stand-alone software applications. 

Firewalls are tools that can be used to enhance the security of computers connected to a network, such as a LAN or the Internet.

Firewalls act as a filter between your computer network and the Internet. You can program what you want to get out and what you want to get in except that nothing else will be allowed. Firewalls can be used in many ways to add security to your home or business. 




Types of Firewall 

There are three types of firewalls that are used by companies to protect their data and devices in order to keep hackers out of the network.

1. Packet Filters 

Packet Filter Firewall is used to control network access by monitoring outgoing and incoming packets and to pass or halt them based on IP addresses, protocols and ports. 

Packet filtering technique is suitable for small networks but becomes complex when applied to large networks. It should be noted that these types of firewalls may not block all types of attacks. 2. Stateful Inspection 

Stateful Packet Inspection, sometimes called dynamic packet filtering, is a powerful firewall architecture that examines end-to-end traffic streams. [Firewalls in network security]  These smart and fast firewalls use an intelligent way to block off unauthorized traffic by analyzing packet headers and inspecting the status of the packets along with providing proxy services. These firewalls operate at the network layer in the OSI model and are more secure than basic packet filtering firewalls.

Also called application level gateways, Proxy Server firewalls are the most secure type of firewalls that effectively protect network resources by filtering messages at the application layer. 

Proxy firewalls mask your IP address and limit traffic types. They provide a complete and protocol-aware security analysis for the protocols they support. Proxy server provides the best internet experience and improves network performance. 



Private network security 

It’s all about the basic firewalls that are configured to protect private networks. No matter which firewall you choose, make sure to have a proper configuration as any flaw can do more damage to you than without a firewall. Create a secure network and deploy a suitable firewall to limit access to your computer and network.
