 Sodium chloride, what is it and where does it occur in nature? 

It is also known as table salt or simply “salt”. It is the sodium salt of hydrochloric acid with the chemical formula NaCl. So sodium ions and chloride ions form this salt. In its solid form, it occurs in large quantities in the Earth’s crust as the rock-forming mineral halite or rock salt. 

It produces 70 percent of the table salt consumed worldwide. The remainder is obtained from sea salt, as the sea has the largest reserves of dissolved table salt. The average salinity of seawater is about 3.5%. The range is quite large: the salt content in the Dead Sea is 28%, in the Baltic Sea from 0.2 to 2%. 

 

Physiological saline solution is sodium chloride solution 

If you’ve ever had an infusion from your doctor or in a hospital, chances are high that it was sodium chloride solution, also known as NaCl solution for short. How is it coming? In terms of quantity, sodium, along with calcium and potassium, is one of the most important minerals in the human body. With a weight of 70 kg, we have about 100 g of sodium, which exists in the form of Na + ions.  

Two thirds of the associated ions are chloride ions (Cl–) and one third are bicarbonate ions (HCO3–). 97% of them are outside the cells (extracellular), 3% inside the cells (intracellular). Since NaCl makes up 90% of the extracellular electrolytes in the blood, a solution in which sodium chloride dissolves in water as much as it does in blood isotonic or physiological saline solution. 

Isotonic means that the osmolarity is the same as that of the blood plasma. Therefore, unlike pure water, this isotonic saline solution can also be infused into the blood vessel system in large quantities. This is why saline is often used as a carrier solution for medicine. Sometimes it is also used to replenish volume after severe blood loss.

 

Sodium Chloride Usage 

N. Indispensable as table salt for nutrition, serves to preserve meat and fish and to obtain almost all compounds of sodium and chlorine (Down process sodium). N. Forms the basis of hydrochloric acid and soda production. It is used in the side and die industry, in tanneries, for chlorinated roasting in metallurgy, and for glazing in ceramic production. 

In the laboratory, N. is used to make cold mixtures. NaCl solutions that are isotonic with body fluids are used in medicine as physiological saline solutions. N. It is also used as road salt (denatured like cattle salt, also mixed with magnesium chloride).
