The job of How does an AC work is to regulate the temperature humidity ratio to such a level that it is comfortable and healthy for us. As most air conditioners come with a filter, it also removes various contaminants like dust, soot, pollen, etc. from the circulating air. Although it doesn’t clean the air to the level of an air purifier, air conditioners actually do quite a job of cleaning the air.

What Exactly Does an Air Conditioner Unit Do? It draws air from a room or a building and passes it to the side of the refrigeration system that is very cold and absorbs the heat of the air. How cold a refrigeration system is is determined by how the thermostat is regulated. In a water-cooling air conditioning unit, heat is drawn away from the water flow. So basically the principle is simple.
There are many things associated with the modern air conditioner, which make it more than just a cooling device. In fact if it is just a cooling device, it would be really wrong to call it an air conditioning unit. Ideally it should provide a comfortable temperature inside the room, no matter how hot or cold outside. So many air conditioners come with a heat pump whose function is simply to reverse the refrigeration cycle. So when it’s cold outside, you can still be warm and comfortable inside.
Invention of air conditioning system
The first modern air conditioning system was developed in 1902 by a young electrical engineer named “Willis Haviland Carrier”.
How Does Air Conditioning Work
Talking about the structure of AC, it has two main parts. First indoor unit i.e. which is installed inside the house and second outdoor unit which is installed outside the house. These two parts are connected together by a pipe. Let us now look at the internal structure of these two parts. The outer part consists of a condenser, condenser fan, compressor and expansion valve, while the inner part houses an evaporator and a blower fan. The heat of the room is exchanged through this evaporator.
The pipe connecting the two parts of the AC is filled with a gas called refrigerant. When we turn on the AC, (How does an AC work) first the compressor installed in the outer part compresses the gas filled in the pipe by reducing its volume. By reducing the volume, the molecules of the gas come closer and their temperature increases, this temperature is higher than the temperature of the atmosphere.
This gas with high temperature and pressure goes to the condenser coil in the next stage. A fan present here throws out the hot gas around the condenser coil and the hot gas inside the condenser coil cools down and turns into a liquid. The temperature of this gas converted into liquid state is still high.
After the excess heat is transferred, the medium heat and high pressure fluid from the coil reaches the expansion valve for the next stage. Here the pressure is reduced by passing this liquid through a very thin tube, resulting in the liquid becoming extremely cold (much below room temperature).
This cooled fluid moves towards the evaporator located inside the house. With the help of a blower or fan installed here, the cold air around the evaporator is thrown out and the warm air of the room flows towards the evaporator, as a result we feel cool.
There is also moisture present in our room which condenses when it comes in contact with a cold evaporator coil and turns into water which is taken out with the help of a pipe. After receiving the room heat, the cold liquid present in the evaporator coil gets heated again into a gas and moves towards the compressor, (How does an AC work) from where this gas is again compressed and converted into a gas of high temperature and pressure. This cycle continues until the AC makes the room temperature equal to the temperature directed to it.
