Hydrogen Powered Car 

A hydrogen powered car is a car that runs on hydrogen instead of gasoline. In particular, it usually refers to an automobile equipped with a hydrogen engine (hydrogen fuel engine) that burns hydrogen by improving conventional internal combustion engines such as a gasoline engine or a diesel engine. 

On the other hand, there are also automobiles that spin the motor by generating electricity from an on-board fuel cell through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. This is a type of vehicle called a “fuel cell vehicle (FCV)”. Since hydrogen is used to generate electricity, it is sometimes called a “hydrogen vehicle”. 

The main hydrogen vehicles currently being developed are bi-fuel type hydrogen vehicles that use both hydrogen and gasoline (the two types of fuel can be switched and used with one engine). On the other hand, those using hydrogen, Toyota and Nissan commercial vehicles are known as fuel cell vehicles. 

 

 

How Hydrogen Vehicles Work 

Hydrogen vehicles are equipped with hydrogen engines. This engine takes hydrogen and air and burns them to generate water vapor, which moves the pistons and creates the propulsion for the car to move. Current gasoline engines burn gasoline and air inside the engine, so the basic mechanism doesn’t change much.

On the other hand, in a fuel cell vehicle, electricity is generated and a motor is rotated to obtain electricity. In the case of fuel cell vehicles, which are now becoming more widespread, hydrogen as fuel is basically refilled at a dedicated stand such as a hydrogen station. 

 

 

Advantages of Hydrogen Car 

Hydrogen cars emit only water vapor (water) while driving. This is the biggest advantage over gasoline-powered vehicles. It does not emit exhaust gases containing carbon dioxide or other components. Nitrogen oxides are produced during combustion, but this is also a small amount compared to gasoline engines. 

In addition, since the original hydrogen vehicle can be used by improving the gasoline engine, there is also an advantage that can be offered by applying existing engine technology. This point has an advantage over the fuel cell type.

Challenges in Hydrogen Vehicles too 

From a user point of view, there are not enough hydrogen stations that can replenish hydrogen. It is said that it costs four to five times more to build a hydrogen station than a gas station. In addition, hydrogen fuel requires a high-pressure tank with sufficient strength to achieve high-density storage, and a hydrogen fuel tank that fully meets that requirement is still under research and development.
