Recycling Water

Wastewater technology is at the threshold of what scientists call a paradigm shift. The future lies in the reuse of water. 

Thanks to membrane technology, this is technically possible. The polluted water is filtered and pressurized through a series of membranes with extremely fine pores. Most unwanted substances, including bacteria, are filtered out this way. 

In order to convert wastewater into drinking water, it must also be treated with ultraviolet light. The so-called UV disinfection reduces the number of germs in the water manifold. 


Recycle waste water and materials 

The research is faced with the task of developing a sewage SYSTEM that enables the sustainable use of water as a resource. (Water Reclamation System) The goal is to reuse the material in not only the water, but also the wastewater. Waste water is divided into gray water, yellow water, gray water and black water. 

Gray water is the water that was used to wash the body and clothes. Yellow water in urine and brown water mixed with feces. Black water is the name given to all the waste water that flows into the sewer system. Separating this wastewater makes sense as each can be used for its own sake. 

Yellow water becomes fertilizer, gray water can be used to generate energy and brown water can be very easily converted into water that can be used, for example, for watering flowers and to wash again.


Water Reclamation System 

There are various (mechanical, chemical, biological) recycling systems. In any case, this requires a separate water pipe, which directs wastewater from the wash basin and tub into the gray water system. The recycling system collects containers, filters and pumps and can be placed in a basement or garden. Compact systems that can recycle 300 to 500 liters of gray water per day are suitable for single family homes. 

In the first stage, the system filters out coarse dirt (such as hair) and enriches the water with oxygen. In the second stage, the water is treated with microorganisms. 

Manufacturers use membrane technology: it specifically cleans water with fine filters (pore size 0.00005 millimeters!) that reliably inhibit bacteria and viruses. Other systems disinfect water with UV light. 

The cleaned gray water is pumped into another container and “waits” for its use. If enough treated water is not available to flush the toilet or to water the garden, either drinking water is topped up or, if available, rainwater from the tank. Only specialist companies are allowed to install recycling systems.
